Michael Shamos is a Distinguished Career Professor in the School of Computer Science. He is the Director of the M.S. in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation program in the Language Technologies Institute and holds a joint appointment in the Institute for Software Research. From 1999-2018 he was Director of the MSIT in eBusiness Technologies and its predecessor, the M.S. in Electronic Commerce. He is known as a founder of the field of Computational Geometry. He served for 25 years as an examiner of computerized voting systems for six states, including Pennsylvania. He founded two Pittsburgh software companies, Unilogic, Ltd. and Lexeme Corporation. Also an intellectual property lawyer, Dr. Shamos is a frequent expert witness in computer-related patent cases. He received his M.S., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University, his J.D. from Duquesne University, his M.S. in Technology of Management from American University and his M.A. in Physics from Vassar College, and his A.B. in Physics from Princeton.
